Must try: Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway

I’ve never been a big fan of chye thow kway (or carrot cake). I mean, I love the first few mouths, then it gets a little too boring when I’m halfway through my plate. But Jon brought me to this stall, which he claims its the best! I was skeptical, but after I tried it.. It was heavenly!



The balance of the sweetness was perfect! Most carrot cake stalls tend to add to much sweet sauce to their dish. But Lau Goh’s is perfect. You could taste the wok hei taste with the sweetness of the sauces. But what I love most is the texture! His kueh is super soft and moist! This is because his kueh is homemade and chopped with his hands (hence the irregular shape!). And some sides are purposely overcooked to give a nice crisp which is filled with the charred caramelized taste!

This has officially become my favorite chye thow kuay place, and hence Zion Riverside Food Centre (where this stall is located) has become one of me and Jon’s favorite hawker centres! Here’s the other good food that we order there, to eat with our delicious chye tow kueh!

I love their soup so much! Its soothing and bursting with prawn flavors! And they use the big head prawns instead, which gives it the extra oomph! Their soup is really one of the best I’ve tasted, and there’s no signs of MSG!

A lot of food bloggers rave about the char kuey teow here! I have to say, it is a really yummy plate! The wok hei taste is good, the balance of the flavors is just right! And for the price,they give a super generous portion of noodles and ingredients! There’s always a really long queue, so a great testimony!
